This is a picture taken from a man charged with animal cruelty in Florida for starving more than eleven horses. It came from an online newspaper found here: http://www2.jcfloridan.com/jcf/news/local/article/jackson_county_man_charged_with_animal_cruelty/13482/

I believe this picture of the obviously starved horse appeals to pathos. Anyone who sees this is probably going to feel some kind emotional response, be it to cringe, look away, or tear up. I personally am appalled that someone could do this to an animal. In addition to being starved, these horses were infested with worms, another sign of neglect that the man had not been giving them their shots. Not only is it wrong to mistreat animals but it is also illegal in most of the United States. *

This argument is about stopping animal cruelty and suffering. The best way to appeal to people about this is through pictures of abuse and neglect that appeal to pathos, or emotions. There are many organizations in the United States that fund and support such rescue operations like this one to save animals from conditions that they otherwise might die in. The ASPCA and PETA are just two examples.

Saving animals is important to me because for one, animals cannot help themselves and they depend on humans to survive, and two they deserve a chance at life just like every human has the right to. Animal rights are important because it is our duty as a sentient and capable species to look after animals and care for them, not mistreat them like they cannot feel pain or do not have needs.

An Interesting Argument August 28, 2009

Hey everyone,

I thought that this was an interesting form of argument when I stumbled upon Criss Angel’s show.  For people who don’t know who Criss Angel is, he is a magician that has performed many amazing feats including “Buried Alive,” a trick that Houdini never completed and another man died trying to complete.
I think Angel makes an argument for what he does, “magic” in a sense.  His performances have even left me in awe, even though I doubt the credibility of magic as much as every other down to earth person.  Angel makes an argument that his performances are real and it is hard not to believe him.

Here’s a link to one of his videos, but there are plenty of them on youtube if you want to see more!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbWabi63NJk&NR=1
